NCAA Softball Field Rule Changes 2016 - 2017

The NCAA Softball Rules Committee and the Playing Rules Oversight Panel have approved rule changes for the 2016 & 2017 seasons. The new rules affect backstop padding, dugout railing, netting and padding and foul poles. Following are the changes you need to know about...

Dugout Protection   Backstop Padding   Foul Poles

Rule 2, 2.10

Dugout protection was identified as a major concern for the safety of occupants. The NCAA highly recommends that the field side of the dugout be protected with netting or fencing a minimum of 6’ high from the floor of the dugout except for entrances and exits.  This type of protection will be a requirement by the 2018 season.

Rule 2, 2.2

Backstop padding was another point of emphasis in the new rules changes. Since 2011 it was recommended that backstops made out of wood, cement or brick be padded from dugout to dugout. This becomes a requirement for the 2016 season.

Rule 2, 2.12

A recommendation has also been made to change the height and color of foul poles. The foul pole should be a single color. White or optic orange is preferred as it helps enhance the umpire’s ability to correctly rule on balls traveling near the pole. Foul poles should extend vertically upward a minimum of 10’ or the recommended height of 20’ from the ground.  Beginning in 2018 foul poles on institutional fields shall meet these requirements).
