Safety Tips for Track & Field

Track & field is a great sport that requires participants to begin learning the basics at a tender age for the good of the athlete. Other than running, track & field has a host of other events that include sprinting, jumping and throwing. With the appropriate coaching and determination, an athlete can learn to become a success in this sport.

As earlier noted, track & field has various different specialties. Basically, all of these events include wearing proper shoes and clothing. It is very important to always keep note of the weather and heavily invest in protective gear for use during rainy days. Most importantly, participating athletes must always be in good health. As a result, there might be the need of a physical to determine legible participants.

It is essential that athletes warm up with the appropriate exercises before hand and cool down after each event. There should be plenty of water available for the athlete at all times. Make sure not to over train as this might result in future injuries to the athlete. Furthermore, having the appropriate coaching staff with relevant knowledge of the sport and ability to administer first aid whenever needed is ideal for this sport. It is the duty of the coach to provide the athlete with the correct body placement and fundamentals as well as techniques that suit each of the track & field specialties.

Track

When running, it is very essential that each athlete knows the appropriate guidelines for being on the running track. It is an area that is only meant for practice and running purposes. As a result, non participants should always stay out of the path of any runners on the track. Do not form congregations on the running track and once you are done with your race, clear the track for incoming runners.

Hurdles

When jumping hurdles, athletes must ensure that the equipment they are using is in the best condition and has passed safety instructions. Immediately when one is done with the race, make sure to clear the path of other incoming hurdlers.

Field Events

Field events include long, high, triple jump, and pole vaulting. Make sure you keep your eyes open for people or objects that may be in your path or for conditions that are wet and or slippery. Ensure the equipment passes safety tests and the field and or pits are free of debris. When pole vaulting, make sure the landing areas are protected appropriately. Keep in mind that improper use of a vaulting pole can break it; thus make sure you learn the appropriate techniques for proper use of the pole. In addition, use a pole that fits your size and weight. After you are done with the pole, put it away immediately.

Throwing

Throwing track & field events include shot put, discus, hammer and javelin throws. Ensure the throwing areas are free of objects and people. Make sure you don't run alongside a javelin that has been thrown. Furthermore, athletes should ensure to carry the javelin properly while holding it vertically with the point facing downward. Only collect the equipment being thrown after it has been thrown.
